The art of rope work is so ancient that nomenclature is oft times a problem. I like the name Ringbolt Hitching or even Kackling, but it would be equally correct to call it Cockscombing. Originally it was used as chafing gear or a covering applied to iron rings, the ringbolts which ranged along the decks or the anchor rings. It was also used to cover any round object such as a hand rail. But the round object I have chosen is the wrist.
